Privacy policy

SplitWithUs is a calculator that runs in your browser. This policy explains what data exists when you use it, where it goes, and how long it stays. In short: the settlement you enter stays on your device unless you choose to create a share link, and the site shows Google ads, which use cookies.

What you enter

Trip names, people's names or nicknames, receipts, amounts, currencies and dates are processed in your browser. They are not sent to our server while you work. We do not ask for an email address, an account, or real names; nicknames work just as well.

Share links

When you press "Share to the group chat", the settlement is stored on our server so the link can be short. What is stored: the trip name, the names you entered, and each receipt (title, amount, currency, date, who paid, who shared it, home currencies). It is stored with a random ten-character id and nothing else: no IP address, no cookie, no account. The data sits in Cloudflare D1, a database run by our hosting provider.

  • Anyone who has the link can open the settlement. Share it only with the people it concerns, and do not put sensitive details in receipt titles.
  • Stored settlements are deleted automatically 365 days after they were created.
  • To delete one earlier, email us the link at [email protected].
  • If the share service cannot be reached, the link carries the settlement itself after the "#" sign instead. That part of a web address is not sent to any server.

Storage in your browser

We do not set cookies of our own. The calculator uses your browser's storage for convenience only:

  • sessionStorage keeps the trip you are working on for the current tab, and is cleared when the tab closes.
  • localStorage keeps your last issued settlement on this device, so you can reopen it later. The "Forget it" button, or clearing your browser's site data, removes it.

Exchange rates are downloaded from this site. Your browser does not contact any rate provider.

Advertising and cookies

This site shows ads served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on those visits. You can opt out of personalised advertising in Google Ads Settings (adssettings.google.com), and opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies at aboutads.info. Google explains how it uses information from sites that show its ads at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are asked for consent through a Google-certified consent message before personalised ads are shown. Visitors in US states with privacy laws can limit how their data is used for ads through the same Google settings.

Services that receive technical data

  • Cloudflare hosts the site. Like any web host it receives your IP address and browser details to deliver pages and block abuse. See the Cloudflare privacy policy.
  • Google Fonts serves the typefaces, so your browser requests them from Google's servers.
  • Google AdSense, as described above.

We do not sell personal information, and we do not use analytics that follow you across sites.

Do Not Track

There is no common standard for how websites should respond to a browser's Do Not Track signal, so this site does not change its behaviour when it receives one. Our own pages do not track you. Google's advertising follows its own policies and the ad choices described above.

Children

SplitWithUs is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
